McCarthy's Tour Down Under campaign led by world's best

MARYBOROUGH's Jay McCarthy will be led by the world's best road cyclist through the six-stage Tour Down Under.

McCarthy, who riders for BORA-hansgrohe, finished third at last year's TDU, one position better than his 2016 result.

The Maryborough rider, who finished second in Sunday's elite men's road race at the Cycling Australia Road National Championships, will have plenty of class leading the way for his 2018 campaign.

Three-time UCI World Road Race champion Peter Sagan will lead, alongside a team that boasts the likes of 2017 Tour de France stage winner Maciej Bodnar, 2016 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race winner Peter Kennaugh.

McCarthy made his Tour de France debut in 2017, a strong TDU campaign could set up the 25-year-old for another tilt at what is arguably the world's most recognised road cycling event.

The Tour Down Under starts on January 16, and will be televised by Channel Nine.
