Mates after title battles

WARWICK driver Jamie Furness will battle it out with Dion Cidoni for two championship titles in the final round of the Queensland Motor Racing Championships at Morgan Park Raceway this weekend.

After three rounds, Furness has a 14-point lead over Cidoni for the championship in the HQ Holden category.

There are 20 points on offer for a heat win and 16 for second.

Furness can drop off the lead if Cidoni wins a race and he has a no finish in one heat.

“It is pretty competitive in the HQ class but Dion and I are mates after the end of racing,” Furness said.

Last year, Furness won the rookie title.

“I am keen to win the open title this year,” Furness said.

“My grandfather, Kev Bonwick, will do most of the work behind the scenes in the pits.”

In the Ironfarmers Series for V8 cars, Furness leads by 24 points from Brisbane driver Brad Schomberg.

The Ironfarmers series is contested by all of the members of the Ironfarmers group.

Another Warwick driver doing well in the state championships is Rebecca Dawes who is currently third in the gemini category.

Steve Draheim is leading in improved production by 20 points from Tony Isarasena. Racing at Morgan Park is all day Saturday and Sunday.
