Marathon operation saves pet

CHARLIE, the daschund from Nobby, is a lucky dog according to Dr Jane Gilmore from Warwick Veterinary Clinic.

Dr Gilmore said Charlie was brought to the Allora Veterinary Clinic at 4pm on February 24 after being run over and was redirected straight to the Warwick Veterinary Clinic because of the extent of his injuries.

"We did X-rays which showed he had a fractured pelvis and diaphragmatic hernia, started operating at 6pm and finished at 8.30pm," Dr Gilmore said.

"He had to be operated on that night as he was deteriorating."

Dr Chris Reardon was the surgeon, Dr Ian Olsen the assistant and Dr Gilmore the anaesthetist.

"Some of the abdominal organs were sitting inside his chest so the dog needed artificial respiration during the procedure until the hole between the chest and abdomen was closed," she said.

"We were happy with the surgery but there was no guarantee he would make a full recovery.

"Charlie was in our hospital for five days and has recovered well.

"It was the biggest operation of its kind I have been involved in during 19 years as a veterinary surgeon."

On Saturday, Dr Gilmore welcomed Charlie back to the clinic but only for a 15-minute visit to remove the staples from the surgical incision.

The clinic's open day is on March 31 from 8.30am to noon and visitors can inspect the theatre used for Charlie's operation and copies of the digital x-rays.

Charlie's owners Corina and John Sutton said they were grateful to clinic staff.

"It is a lifetime commitment to look after pets," Mrs Sutton said.

After the accident, Mr Sutton admitted Charlie wasn't too good.

"They gave him painkillers at the clinic straight away," he said.

Charlie turns four this year.
