Manila police detonate bomb near embassy
MANILA's police bomb squad yesterday detonated a suspected improvised explosive device found near the US Embassy.
The "suspicious package” was found inside a carton and included a mobile phone and an electronic gadget.
Police swept nearby for other potential bombs and later declared the area safe.
The incident followed a military offensive near Zamboanga City in the south of the country, where troops killed 11 terrorists linked to Islamic State and wounded five others.
Four soldiers were slightly wounded.
The dead were part of the Maute group, which encourages "similar- minded individuals to support ISIS”, a military spokesman said.
The group had occupied an abandoned town hall, school and mosque in Lanao del Sur.
