Man dies onboard asylum-seeker boat

A MAN has died onboard a boat carrying 59 asylum-seekers north-east of Christmas Island.

The boat, which also had two crew on board, was intercepted by HMAS Launceston on Friday.

Border Protection officials had received reports of a person with a medical condition onboard the boat before it was boarded by crew from HMAS Launceston.

Attempts to revive the man proved unsuccessful. His body was taken to Christmas Island.

The remaining passengers were also taken to Christmas Island to undergo security checks.

More than 7000 people have arrived in Australian waters by boat since the Federal Government announced it was reopening the processing centre on Nauru.

More than 1300 people and 24 boats have been intercepted this month alone.
