Man jailed after threatening police with meat cleaver

A HERVEY Bay man has been jailed after arming himself with a meat cleaver, jumping through a glass window onto the bonnet of a car before threatening police who had their guns drawn.

Michael John Hamilton, 40, pleaded guilty on Thursday in the Brisbane District Court to assaulting police while armed with a dangerous weapon.

The court heard the incident occurred on May 26 last year at Caboolture while he was visiting his mother.

Crown prosecutor Jennifer O'Brien told the court police were faced with a very real and potentially deadly situation.

She said the father of three was no stranger to the law given his three-page criminal history for drug, robbery and property-related offences.

"Police were called to the address to investigate a disturbance," she said.

"When they arrived a man jumped through the front window of the house and landed on a car parked in the driveway.

"He had a meat cleaver strapped to his arm, he started to raise it and advanced towards police while also making threats towards them.

"Three officers drew their guns while a fourth managed to taser him before he was disarmed while on the ground."

Defence barrister Robert Glenday said Hamilton had suffered a relationship breakdown and had started abusing alcohol.

He said Hamilton later recorded a blood alcohol reading in hospital of 0.271.

"To his credit Your Honour, he has now reduced his alcohol consumption and limits himself to six tall necks per day," he said.

"He does not recall jumping through the window or being tasered.

"His behaviour was somewhat unusual."

Judge Paul Smith sentenced Hamilton to 18 months behind bars but ordered he be released from prison after serving two months of the sentence.

He told Hamilton he was extremely fortunate he was not shot, given his actions on the day.
