Long Tan Cup returns

AFTER years on the sidelines the Long Tan Cup is back as part of the Warwick RSL Memorial Club Races.

The Long Tan Cup has not been run since the late 1990s but organisers are sure Saturday will be a successful day.

Warwick Turf Club committee member Nick Inmon said after finding the old trophies at the clubhouse the club was inspired.

"We approached the RSL Memorial Club and mentioned to them about sponsoring the day and they have come on board and donated a new trophy," Mr Inmon said.

"We are glad to be able to return the day to the people and to what it used to be."

Warwick RSL Services and Citizens Memorial Club secretary manager Jo Schwenke said it felt like the right time for the club to get on board.

"We wanted to become involved and when we heard about the Anzac Day meet it just seemed appropriate we sponsor it," she said.

"It will become a perpetual trophy called the Warwick RSL Memorial Club Cup."

Mr Inmon said excellent track conditions have meant race nominations have also been pleasing.

"In the 1100m open handicap race we have 20 nominations so far and will have final numbers in the next few days," he said.

"We could not be happier at this point and it should be a great day.

"The club is encouraging people to set up for the day and enjoy their own lawn party with plenty of food and beverages available.

Ms Schwenke agreed that the revived race day would be a success.

"We were more than happy to support the Turf Club and this will be a great day out for everyone," she said.

Warwick RSL Memorial Club Race Day will be held at Allman Park on Victoria St, Warwick, and gates open at 11am.

Tickets are two for the price of one at just $10, pensioners are $5 and kids under 15 enter for free.
