Local grudge match to test both teams

RIVALRIES are set to be rekindled this weekend when Stanthorpe takes on Warwick in a representative fixture.

Stanthorpe will head north for the Mitchell Shield tie to be held at Slade Park on Sunday.

In a competition with three teams, only two will make the final.

Lockyer beat Warwick in the first game of the competition so Stanthorpe only has to beat Warwick to secure a final spot.

On the other hand, Warwick needs to win and win well to make sure of a finals spot.

If Stanthorpe beats Warwick on Sunday and beats Lockyer on February 18, Stanthorpe will host the final against Lockyer.

Stanthorpe made the final of the Mitchell Shield competition last season before going down to Lockyer.

"It's pretty competitive. Lockyer would be the team to beat this year I think,” Stanthorpe Cricket Association president Luke Brady said.

"The basis of last year's team will be there from last year. We're definitely able to put out a strong side. We've been in the final a lot in the last 10 years.”

Brady said the potential for another final against Lockyer was enticing.

"It's always a bit of a grudge match because we've both been the top teams for the last 10 years or so I'd say.”

Stanthorpe will also take on Warwick in the Davis Shield competition at Mayhew Oval.

The Davis Shield is designed for cricketers under the age of 23.

"They'll take on Warwick in a 50 over match,” Brady said.

He said the two games on Sunday will be for the Bourke Hendry trophies.
