Little Theatre's witty new production comes to town

AS PART of its summer comedy series, Stanthorpe Little Theatre is presenting The Female of the Species, an hilarious roller-coaster ride about feminism, motherhood, humankind and journalism, full of strong language, adult themes, political jokes and a cow.

Written by Joanna Murray-Smith, one of Australia's most successful playwrights, the plot is inspired by - but only loosely based on - a real life incident.

The main character, Margot Mason, is a feminist writer suffering from writer's block. She's only written 223 words nearing the deadline for her next book, and she's about to meet the consequences of her early radical views and advice.

Molly Rivers, a former student of Margot's, arrives seeking revenge for personal losses she blames on Margot's teachings. And Molly has a gun. She handcuffs Margot to her desk and threatens to shoot her.

Molly's plans are interrupted as Margot's exhausted daughter Tess arrives. She agrees Margot should be shot.

Tess's stockbroker husband, Bryan, arrives, then taxi driver, Frank, and Margot's publisher, Theo.

All add their own confusion, opinions and personalities to the group critique of Margot's feminist failings. And then there's the cow. . .

Female of the Species deftly walks the tightrope between satire and farce proving the female of the species is not only deadlier, but funnier than the male!

Showing at Stanthorpe Little Theatre on July 14, 15, 20 and 22 at 7pm. Tickets are $20 or $15 concession.

The July 21 performance has been cancelled. Arrange for a ticket change or refund from Gracious Giving.
