Cowboys defeated by Diehards

THE Warwick Cowboys went down to the Dalby Diehards 24-18 at Father Ranger Oval in the Toowoomba Rugby League Match of the Day.

Cowboys coach Gary Lawrence said the team went into yesterday’s game short on numbers and Scott Beard and Garth Miller both took to the field with injuries.

Lawrence was pleased with the team’s performance as they stuck to their plan of playing for each other.

They had chances in the first half but could not capitalise on them.

Warwick went to the half-time break trailing 8-0.

Dalby looked to set the pace in the second half scoring in the opening minute to go to a 14-0 lead, before the Cowboys made their way back into the game with Bob Nicholls scoring out wide. Trent Achilles converted to trail 14-6.

The Cowboys crossed the line through the hands of Aaron McVeigh, with Achilles converting. They then trailed by two points.

On the attack again, centre Bob Nicholls sprinted 40 metres to score out wide with the conversion unsuccessful to lead the Diehard 16-14, before a Cowboys penalty in front took the two points to lead 18-14 before the Diehards came back with two tries in the last five minutes to win.

Gary said the young players like Vinne Mei and under 18 player Jeremy Jerome, who was called up to A-grade just before kick-off time, both played well, showing depth the club has to work with.

Best forward for the Cowboys was Luke Brosnan, with Hayden Nicholls best back and players’ player.

Reserve grade went down 32-38, under 18s won 30-22 and C-grade won 28-16.
