Labor back bencher Andrew Leigh resigns over report dispute

THE deputy chairman of an ALP special committee into migrant workers on mine sites quit on Tuesday night after a dispute over the group's findings.

The Daily Telegraph reported ACT politician Andrew Leigh resigned over a draft report from the caucus committee, which was created after resources magnate Gina Rinehart did a deal to use 1700 migrant workers on her mines.

Ms Rinehart's migrant worker deal in May caused a major rift in the Labor caucus, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said she had found out about the deal after it was made.

The News Limited paper reported the committee's findings could ignite issues within Labor if it called for more focus on Australian workers.
