Kangaroos lose Slater in World Cup caning

AUSTRALIA is through to the semi-finals of the Rugby League World Cup but could be without star fullback Billy Slater who was helped off the ground with a knee injury just after half-time in the 62-0 win over the USA yesterday morning.

Slater hurt his left knee after fielding a bomb and copping a heavy shot from US forward Roman Hifo. Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens said he was hopeful the Melbourne Storm champion could be back in time for the final, assuming Australia makes it that far.

"It's an injury to his old injury," Sheens said. "He's got no PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) so he can't hurt it, it's just a matter of if there's any other damage."

Australia took just two sets to open the scoring against the World Cup debutants, winger and man of the match Brett Morris running in the first of his four first-half tries.

Jarryd Hayne also scored four tries for the match to justify the late decision by Sheens to play him in the centres at the expense of Brent Tate.

In the other quarter-finals, England booked a place in next weekend's semi-final by beating France 34-6 and New Zealand belted Scotland 40-4.

SCORE: Australia 62 (Hayne 4, Inglis 2, Morris 4, Smith, Cronk tries; Thurston 6 goals) d USA 0.
