Juniors don Roma jerseys for carnival
Rugby League: Three junior Gremlins have donned the Roma colours to take up a special invitation to contest one of rugby leagues' biggest carnivals.
Matthew Murphy, Hamish Cole and Stuart Filmer were hand-selected to run on for a Roma representative side at the recent 47th Battalion Carnival in Gladstone.
Despite not having a training run with their teammates, the trio performed well at the carnival as their side ran second.
They conquered their opponents in game one and two before going down to Toowoomba in the final.
"Peter Flynn, who is the manager for the Roma side, contacted me saying he'd heard about our predicament and what we're doing with our boys, trying to give them games, so he offered that we could have a few boys join their squad,” Stanthorpe Junior Rugby League president Lindsay Adams said.
For the Gremlins under-18s it's been a tough year with few games, but it hasn't been for lack of trying.
They've played Warwick Cowboys twice and Glen Innes once, with another match-up with the Magpies in the works for July 21.
With no other teams to play against, there's no official competition for the U18s. Murphy, Filmer and Cole, along with several other youngsters, have this season been plying their trade at A-grade level for the Gremlins instead.
Adams said he'd tried to get Warwick to come to the table, so far to no avail.
