Jillaroos Trio to fly home flag at World Cup finals

JILLAROOS trio Jo Barrett, Stephanie Hancock and Heather Ballinger and Australian Defence Forces forward Adam Fisher will fly the Southern Downs flag in World Cup rugby league finals at the weekend in England.

The Jillaroos rested four players, including Hancock and Barrett, for their Women's World Cup round game against New Zealand. Ballinger was in the starting side for the game on Friday morning (AEST).

Hancock is originally from Killarney, Barrett from Warwick and Ballinger was a boarder at The Scots PGC College.

While the Jillaroos went down 14-6 in the round game against New Zealand, the scoreline indicates the final between the same two sides will be a close match.

New Zealand has not been beaten at World Cup level but the Aussies have a team with youth and experience which is performing well in England.

Australia qualified for the final with a 14-6 win against England and 72-0 victory against France so had already qualified for the final regardless of the result against New Zealand.

Meanwhile in the Armed Forces World Cup, former Warwick Cowboys forward Adam Fisher will also play in the weekend cup final for Australia against New Zealand.

Australia beat Great Britain 20-16, New Zealand 32-22 and Serbia 112-0 in round games to qualify first for the semis and beat bottom team Serbia 110-0 in the semi final.

New Zealand beat Great Britain narrowly in the other semi to set up a Trans-Tasman battle in the final.

Fisher is playing in his first Armed Services World Cup after joining the Australian Army in 2010 and playing his first home international at Skilled Park at the Gold Coast in an NRL curtain-raiser.
