Jazzing up the 'chalk and talk'

CHILDREN spend on average 12 years sitting behind a desk, staring at a whiteboard.

So, it's no surprise they can become bored by the prospect of doing this day in, day out.

The School of Total Education is inviting all Warwick teachers to join in a valuable workshop to learn how to keep students from dozing off into the oblivion and how to accommodate for all learning abilities and levels.

SOTE teacher Rhonda Mattarollo said the workshop by Brisbane-based educationalist David Waterworth was an experience teachers would not want to miss.

"It is a professional development seminar on the universal design for learning and it's just fantastic," Mrs Mattarollo said.

"It's all about planning for all students in the class because chalk and talk doesn't always suit everyone."

She said Mr Waterworth's seminar was about making the curriculum available to everyone and integrating technology to help further learning in the classroom.

"This it the fifth time I will be watching his seminar and I will still be hanging on to every word," Mrs Mattarollo said.

She said Mr Wentworth's ideology was to look at a classroom like Snow White and her seven dwarfs.

"He says the students are all different like the personalities of the seven dwarfs," Mrs Mattarollo said.

The seminar is on Monday afternoon from 3.30 to 5.30pm and is open to all teachers in the area.

The cost is $75 to attend.

If you would like to join, phone SOTE on 4661 2666.

"We really do want to accommodate as many teachers as we can," Mrs Mattarollo said.
