It's official: Men sleep better after sex

A REPORT sure to attract a chorus of "I told you so" from men around the country has revealed blokes get a better night's rest if they have sex before they go to sleep.

A university study aimed at encouraging Australians to take part in a new national Sleep Debt Check released the findings on Friday.

In a survey of up to 1000 men, about one third claimed lack of sex was the number one cause of restlessness and the best solution to getting some shut-eye.

Women, however, opted for less physical remedies including herbal tea, warm milk or a hot bath.

The study found worrying about things that need to be done the next day, financial stress and work-related trouble were the top three issues keeping the country up at night.

Associate Professor Gerard Kennedy told news.com many Australians underestimated the impact sleep had on their day-to-day life and more than 60% were getting less than they needed.

He said more than six hours a night was vital to physical and mental health and learning about sleep habits was the first step to getting there.

Tips to getting a good night's sleep

  • Sleep in a comfortable bed, in a dark, quiet room
  • Don't have an afternoon-early evening sleep and try to stay awake until at least 8pm
  • Coffee or other brain stimulants keep you awake
  • Don't watch television in bed
  • Sex before sleep can help. Following an orgasm, the body of both males and females becomes completely relaxed, leading to better sleep.
