THE same-sex marriage debate has heated up this week, with QT readers sharing their opinions on Facebook and through an online poll.

In a story published in Tuesday's edition of the QT, Oxley MP Bernie Ripoll said he would vote in favour of same-sex marriage while Blair MP Shayne Neumann remained firmly against it.

According to the online poll, 72% of voters were for same-sex marriage, 25% against and 1% remained undecided (at the time of going to press).

More than 100 people commented on the QT Facebook page, with the majority supporting marriage equality.

"How can our MP vote no when a majority of his electorate say yes?" Jacky Jones-Barnes asked.

"Let's have a referendum like Ireland and let people have a say and not politicians."

"I have friends that have been together for 35 years, why can't they marry?" Samie Jape asked.

Many people like Fran Upton believed it was time for Australia to vote yes on same-sex marriage.

"Why is it that 99% of people that discuss this in open situations support equality and yet politicians, who are elected to represent us and our views, take their own opinions and beliefs and tell us what to think and feel about this topic," she said.

"Those of you that are against this need to ask yourself, what are you afraid of, how will this impact you?"

Others disagreed, siding with Mr Neumann.

"Dead-set against it," Jennifer Doran-Rackham said.

"Marriage is between a man and a woman," Liam Sheahan agreed.

"There can and will be all sorts of other unions, but it ain't marriage."

Ellen Heathwood from headspace Ipswich was happy to see the results of the poll saying marriage equality could have a big impact on mental health of members of the LGBTIQ community.

"In Ipswich more than 20% of the young people coming to headspace identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or other," she said.

"Same-sex attracted young people are six times more likely to attempt suicide.

"Marriage equality is about ending social exclusion and giving all Australians the same basic rights."

Are you for or against same-sex marriage?

This poll ended on 09 June 2015.
