Individual honours given out
Rugby League: Gun half-back Regan Sullivan was the night's big winner when the Stanthorpe Gremlins rounded out their season with a presentation evening.
About 70 people celebrated the end of a successful year, capping off the Gremlins' first foray into the TRL second division.
Club president David Ball said it'd been a positive year for the club.
"Our first year in the TRL saw us making the second round of the semi-finals and only losing four games for the year,” he said.
Ball singled out Sullivan for special praise. He was named Player's Player, Player of the Year and awarded for Most Tries.
"He played for Wattles under-18s last year,” Ball said.
"He's a Tenterfield boy but decided to play with the Stanthorpe side this year.
"He previously played 16s with us too. He made the under-20s Toowoomba Clydesdale representative side this year as well.
"He also picked up Best and Fairest for TRL second division as well. He's got heaps of potential.”
With so many accolades, Ball has no doubt Sullivan has likely caught interest from the outside but is hopeful of retaining him for the 2019 season.
"I think he's pretty happy with the club, the comradeship and his teammates so hopefully he's happy to stay on board because he's an asset to us,” he said.
"He's got a lot of speed and is pretty illusive. He reads the play well. I'd say there's a few blokes looking at him but it'd be good to have him.
"We'll be losing a few of the other young guys going off to university and stuff. But I think we'll retain the likes of Matthew Hendry and a couple others because it'll be the 100th year of the club and they want to be a part of that.”
Also on the night, Norm Crisp received life membership to Stanthorpe Rugby League after his decades of service to the game.
Ball praised the people, including sponsors, who attended the end-of-season bash.
Front of mind for Ball and the club is next year's 100-year anniversary of Stanthorpe Rugby League.
"We've started preparations for the 2019 season, which will be our 100th year of rugby league in Stanthorpe,” he said.
"We are planning something special midway through the season to celebrate this special milestone.”
What that'll be, Ball is a little coy on. But he says they'll be doing everything they can to honour the milestone.
