THE colourful residents of Sunnyvale are back, this time on the big screen.
The characters of SBS's cult hit TV series Housos make their feature-film debut in Housos vs Authority.
Written, directed, produced and starring Housos creator Paul Fenech, the comedy romp sees Franky, Shazza, Dazza and their mates take on every authority possible in a quest to fulfil Shazza's mum's deathbed request to have her ashes sprinkled on top of Uluru.
Fenech, the comedic brain of Aussie comedy series Pizza and Swift and Shift Couriers, is delighted with his latest child of sorts.
"Every time you make a movie it's a bit like you create some sort of Frankenstein and you've got to see what happens," he said.
"Housos is a bogan Frankenstein and it's wearing thongs."
Housos vs Authority was created to satisfy fans as Fenech waited to see if SBS would commission a second series, which the broadcaster eventually did.
"I thought 'we have to give fans something' and the quickest thing I could organise was a movie," he said.
"I know what it's like to be a fan of something and they make you wait.
"People don't want to wait. They want it now.
"Our fans have been so good to us. The fact they'd watch the show at 10pm at night, we wanted to reward them."
Incredibly, from conception to post-production the film was turned around in just seven months.
"Yes I had no life," laughed Fenech.
"Filmmaking is like plastic surgery. There's build-up and pain and it finally all comes good at the end. It's only fun when you see the final result."
As the oddball bunch of bogans make their way from Sydney to Uluru there are car chases, crashes, fights, thong-throwing and clashes with the cops.
"There's tons of action," Fenech said.
"I love action comedies. I hate talkie comedies. To me, that's what people want to see.
"This movie is an action comedy, not just satire."
Fenech even does his own stunts.
"I challenge some of the Australian sprinters to give me a sprinting challenge in thongs," he said.
"I would take home the 100m thong sprint."
The long hours, blisters from running in thongs and cold nights in the Outback are all worth it when Fenech hears an audience laugh in the cinema.
"As a comedian you just want to make people happy and I think we've definitely achieved our mission," he said.
Fenech first achieved prominence by winning third place in Sydney's annual Tropfest short film festival in 1995 for a biographical short entitled Pizza Man based on his experiences as a pizza delivery driver.
