Housing, money stresses worsen mental illness

HEALTH authorities fear stress surrounding housing affordability exacerbates mental illness.

After the release of Anglicare Australia's rental affordability snapshot, Mental Health Australia chief executive officer Frank Quinlan said housing and financial stresses could be contributing factors to mental illness.

"Affordable housing for low income earners is extremely important," he said.

"Safe, stable and secure accommodation is vital to the mental health and wellbeing of people and families living with mental illness."

Anglicare's rental affordability snapshot found people on low incomes were bearing the brunt of the housing crisis and that this would continue unless there was an intervention.

Mr Quinlan said more people living with a mental illness rented or needed housing support than owned their home.
