HORSE RACING: Saturday's races went off without a hitch, with the competition tough for participating jockeys and horses.

Toowoomba trainer Tom Dougall started the day strong, with four-year-old chestnut gelding, Gold Search, winning the first race of the day, the Greenlands Timber/ Stanthorpe Border Post Maiden Plate.

Starting the $2.60 favourite, Gold Search led all the way for jockey Nathan Evans to win easily by four lengths.

Warwick's Garry Schwenke won the K & A Building QTIS Benchmark 55 handicap 1000m by a head with Whispering Wings, who had claimed the lead 100m out.

Inverell trainer Wayne Oakenfull's mare Surf Ski easily claimed race the Country Club/ Liquor Legends Class B, leading the whole run to claim the win with with a lead of three lengths.

Dougall continued the day strong with his second win, with Sun Will Shine and jockey Nathan Evans taking out the Central Motors Holden Stanthorpe Cup.

It was a tight run, with Sun Will Shine running to narrowly beat Tapestry Vision and Billy Goat.

Schwenke also claimed a second win of the day, taking out the last race for the Stanthorpe RSL/ Crisps Coaches Benchmark 55 Handicap, with Virtuity ridden by Jedidiah Hodge.

It was a close race, with Virtuity only claiming the win by three-quarters of a length ahead of Chilli Beach.

Jockey Club president Neil Brunckhorst said all of the horses competed strongly on the day.

"The races were very good, there were some quite close finishes and it was a good day of racing,” he said.

Brunckhorst also said it was great to see so many great results.

"There were some close finishes but that makes it better still and more entertaining, more exciting,” he said.

"When it's good, even racing it makes for an even better spectacle.”
