Hockey nationals calling for Warwick players

HOCKEY: Two Warwick hockey players have been selected to play for Queensland in the nationals in Perth in September.

Jack Bergemann and Bailey Rutledge will play for one of two under-13 teams.

It will be the first time Bergemann has represented Queensland at the nationals. “It’s pretty cool,” he said. The Warwick teen has been playing hockey since he was nine, wearing many representative colours in that time.

Last week he played for at the state championships at the Sunshine Coast.

“We came third overall,” Bergemann said.

“It was fantastic.”

The Warwick player said he was looking forward to September’s competition, which will also be his first trip to Perth.

Rutledge is also no stranger to playing for a representative side.

The Assumption College student played for Toowoomba in the state championships.

He also played for Queensland in school hockey last year.

The boys will now prepare for the 2016 Australian U13 Championships which will begin on September 29 and run through until October 8.

The U13s tournament will coincide with the Australian Hockey League (AHL) – Australia’s premier hockey competition for the second year in a row.

The AHL will also be held in Perth over the same dates, presenting an incredible opportunity for the juniors to watch some of Australia’s best players live in action.

Several other Darling Downs players will join the Warwick boys, including Ryan Bidgood and Will Nielsen from Gowrie Junction and Flynn Hilton from Rangeville.
