Historic steamroller on the road
HISTORIC vehicle enthusiasts should rest assured, the old council steamroller is in some very capable, local hands.
One observer took fright recently when he noticed the vehicle was no longer in its proud position at the Yangan Rd depot.
Southern Downs Regional Council yesterday confirmed the historic steamroller, originally from the former Rosenthal Shire Council, was safely tucked away at the Southern Downs Steam Railway precinct where it is undergoing restoration.
Murray Sondergeld, director of the Warwick Mower Centre, is one of the people involved in lovingly bringing the equipment, which was used by council for roadworks across the region, back to its former glory.
Whether the engine itself can be fixed is still touch and go but Mr Sondergeld said a boiler inspector would be coming to inspect it before an acid solution was passed through to clean it and determine its potential.
"It's a very big job," Mr Sondergeld said.
"And it's hard to tell at the moment whether we'll get it running."
If the group is successful, it hopes the steamroller can be used in parades and on public display.
Mr Sondergeld would like to see it remain safely at the precinct, where those journeying on the steam train could perhaps one day enjoy a ride in the steamroller too.
"That way it can become an icon for this area," he said.
