His golden getaway
BRAZILIAN jiu jitsu has taken Tony Torrisi as far as Abu Dhabi and now the sport has taken him to its country of origin.
The 23-year-old recently returned home from a month-long stint in Brazil in which he took out top honours in two competitions.
"I was asked to go to Brazil and train full time with my coach," Torrisi said.
"I trained twice a day, every day and competed twice.
"The first one was a Brazilian State Championship that I won gold at and the second one was the Pan American and I also won gold there."
Torrisi said both competitions were knock-out events.
"If you win your round you go through to the next, and if you win round four you go into the final," he said.
Although he is relatively new to the sport - only starting three-and-a-half years ago - Torrisi is no stranger to the big competitions.
"I have competed in many tournaments and been to the World Championships twice and won the Australian title three times," he said.
Torrisi is a purple belt and competes in the middle-weight division.
This weekend Torrisi will travel to Sydney to compete in the selection trials for the World Championships in Abu Dhabi. Keep an eye out for next week's papers to see how he goes.
