Heavy horses set to show power

FORGET white jodhpurs and polished riding boots, this is one equestrian event where it's all about the horsepower.

Mick Bradford is gearing up for his annual Heavy Horse Day on April 29 and said he was ready for another successful event.

"It will be more or less the same sort of program as last year, but I'm hoping to have 10 horses abreast, eight on pulley chains and 11 pulling the wagon," Mr Bradford said.

People will flock from far and wide to feast their eyes on a herd of heavy horses showing off equipment from the 1800s and 1900s.

"I had a bloke call me from Gympie and once he heard I would be having 10 horses abreast he said, 'I will be there'," Mr Bradford said.

Preparing for a large event like the Heavy Horse Day is not a stroll in the park.

"I work them a couple of days each week and in the last week leading up to the day I will work them every day," Mr Bradford said.

He said the best thing about the event was the true horsepower involved, and spectators would not be disappointed.

"Most horse shows they go to it's all spit and polish, but this is all straight out working with horses."

The Heavy Horse Day begins at 9am and runs until 4pm, with a jumping castle and pony rides to keep the kids entertained and a camp oven stew and barbecue to keep tummies satisfied, with all proceeds going to RACQ CareFlight.

RACQ CareFlight's Suzie Washington said the event had raised more than $100,000 for CareFlight over the years.

"It is a fantastic community event which will not only give RACQ CareFlight a boost, but will also allow younger generations to see the skills of heavy horses and the farming ways of the past," she said.

The event is at 122 Swanfels Rd, Yangan.
