Hail brings white Christmas

DREAMS of a white Christmas - Queensland-style - came true for residents across Ipswich on Saturday when hail blanketed parts of the city.

The dangerous thunderstorms swept through dumping pea- to-marble sized hail about 7pm. Some of the worst-affected areas were at One Mile and Willowbank.

But it didn't stop families making the most of the icy remnants, some making snowmen

and getting into the festive spirit.

Ipswich SES responded to 28 requests for help, mostly for broken skylights and leaking roofs.

One Yamanto retailer received significant water damage to several cash registers at the front of the store during the downpour.

"The worst affected areas were Willowbank, Amberley, Leichhardt and One Mile, along that strip to the west," Ipswich SES area controller Arie van den Ende said.

Hail larger than golf balls was reported at Boonah, south-west of Ipswich, at 5.40pm.

Scenic Rim SES deputy controller Graham Stumer said crews were called to one incident in Harrisville for water damage.

"When we arrived there was so much hail on the roof, we had to shovel it off," he said.

"The hail was not much bigger than golf balls out this way, but most of it was marble sized and a lot of it. We went out to Harrisville two to three hours after the storm and there was still hail lying on the ground which hadn't melted."

The Bureau of Meteorology warns of showers today and a thunderstorm likely this afternoon.
