Family unintended victim in drive-by shooting

DETECTIVES have revealed the targets of a drive-by shooting at Mooloolaba were victims of either a stray bullet or mistaken identity.

Detective Senior Sergeant Daren Edwards said investigations into the shooting at Ulmarra Crt about 4am last Thursday had revealed the bullet, which lodged itself in a family's washing machine, had been misdirected.

"We've made a fair few inquiries and we don't believe those affected were the target," Det Snr Sgt Edwards said.

He said he believed residents of a neighbouring unit were the intended targets and suspected it was a ricocheting bullet that passed through the front door of the home and embedded itself in a washing machine.

Police have ramped up their search for a lime-green sedan suspected to be involved in the shooting.

DET Snr Sgt Edwards said officers had returned to the scene to process the neighbouring unit complex.

He said once inquiries had led police to believe the family targeted may have been unintentional victims, officers were then able to pinpoint who they suspected were the targets.

Det Snr Sgt Edwards said police were determined to nab those responsible for firing the .410 shotgun in what he described as an extremely concerning incident.

"Anyone could have been walking around the house at that time of morning so the potential danger to anyone was significant," he said.

Det Snr Sgt Edwards said residents of the neighbouring unit were away during the initial police investigation.

But conversations with nearby residents had pointed officers to the residents they suspected were the actual targets, and police spoke to those people upon their return.

Det Snr Sgt Edwards reiterated the need for public assistance, particularly in regard to the lime-green Ford sedan police believe was involved in the shooting.

It was captured on CCTV leaving the scene shortly after the shotgun rounds were fired.

If anyone has any information about the incident, and in particular the lime-green Ford sedan, they should contact Crime Stoppers immediately on 1800 333 000.
