Gunners lead the pack after win over Newcastle

FRENCH striker Olivier Giroud ensured Arsenal finished the year on top of the Premier League for the first time since the 2007-08 season after scoring the goal in the Gunners' 1-0 win at Newcastle.

Giroud (pictured), who had not scored in all competitions since November 23, headed the winner in the 65th minute as his side moved one point clear of Manchester City.

Chelsea is third, two points off the lead, after coming from behind to beat Liverpool 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Martin Skrtel put the Reds ahead before Chelsea hit back with goals from Eden Hazard and Samuel Eto'o to inflict a second defeat in four days on Liverpool following its 2-1 loss at Manchester City.

Liverpool is now fifth, while arch-rival Everton is fourth after a 2-1 win over Southampton. Elsewhere, Spurs thumped Stoke 3-0 to move seventh, level on points with Manchester United, who they visit on New Year's Day.
