Guitar pool whets appetite
THE country lifestyle conjures images of kumbaya folk, a piece of straw hanging from the mouth while strumming a guitar, but when a leisure flight caught a glimpse of a certain pool – the country twang was viable.
After some photo plotting, the Warwick Christian College was dubbed as the site with the quirky guitar-shaped aquatic centre.
Warwick Christian College teacher-in-charge Moira Coates said when the weather was warm it was difficult to tempt 44 pupils from the water.
“We’re the only school in Warwick with a pool,” she said.
“During summer – in Terms 1 and 4 – the kids have swimming training every day. The school started in 2007 with seven kids and now we have 44.”
The school’s site was originally the Kingswood Country Retreat where the iconic pool was built about six years ago to strengthen a country theme, but is now the training ground for one of the Southern Downs’ rising swim stars.
Warwick Christian College parent Sharon Ryan’s nine-year-old son Seamus took out the age champion swim gong during March.
“The pool is one of the reasons why we chose the school,” Mrs Ryan said.
“When Seamus turns 10 next year his personal goal is to represent the Darling Downs for State swimming.”
