Group set to shed base

WARWICK'S Men's Shed will well and truly live up to its name when the social group shift to their new digs.

Matt Mason - who started the Rose City chapter of the national organisation - said it was time to find a more permanent home after using the Presbyterian Church hall since the group started last September.

Mr Mason said the move was one step closer after council considered their application for a lease of a council-owned shed on Willi St at last week's meeting.

"We will be able to do things we can't do at the moment - we can't leave anything there for tomorrow or the next week," he said.

"The hard work is kind of done and when we get the key to up the hill there it will be done."

But Cr Jo McNally raised concerns over the potential sale of the property in the future and where this would leave the group.

"I'd hate to get in the same position as Slade, can we say to them from the outset that it's been identified as a property that may be sold into the future?" she said.

It was decided to give the group the go-ahead for its move but emphasise the property could be sold within the 10-year lease. Mr Mason said many of Warwick's recently retired men had embraced the organisation created to give males a place to socialise and discuss difficult issues.

"Word is getting around, there have been a number of other fellows who were thinking starting one up," he said.

"We have got about 25 regulars; last Monday was a ripper of a day."

Mr Mason said men were welcome to just turn up whenever there was a session on with a donation for tea and coffee.
