Group fears ratepayer money will subsidise Adani costs

ENVIRONMENTALISTS have gathered on Mackay Regional Council grounds to protest a visit from Adani delegates.

Mackay Conservation Group coordinator Peter McCallum believed the council was looking to subsidise the cost of setting up business or maintenance infrastructure in Mackay.

But he wanted the council to rule out using ratepayer money to subsidise any part of the project.

"It's an act of desperation to try and get discounts out of small regional councils,” Mr McCallum said.

He believed other councils, like Whitsunday, Rockhampton and Townsville, would also aim to attract Adani to the region through subsidies.

About 20 people attended the protest.

However these claims have not been confirmed by Mackay Regional Council.

The council has been contacted for comment.
