Gremlins knock off Brothers in big win
Rugby League: The Stanthorpe Gremlins proved their superiority across the park on Sunday at Glenholme Park, scoring nine tries with Michael Marini kicking seven goals as they walloped Brothers Leprechauns 50-4.
The winning Round 14 result has the Gremlins perched on the second rung of the Toowoomba Rugby League Clive Berghofer 2nd Division Premiership ladder heading towards the business end of the football season.
"It was an exceptional team effort” coach Gary Skimmings said.
The Stanthorpe line-up was still short some key players, including halfback and Toowoomba under-18 representative Regan Sullivan.
The match against the Brothers Leprechauns was certainly memorable for Stuart Filmer and Spencer Jensen, both debuting in the one-sided result and pocketing tries on the occasion.
Filmer, who was recently invited to represent in the Roma & District side at the QRL Central Division 47th Battalion Under 18 Carnival, played on the wing against Brothers while Jensen showed his ability in the centres and back row.
Centre Lachlan Hendry set the scoreboard in motion after just four minutes touching down to have the Gremlins ahead at 6 - 0.
Minutes later outside back Jake Burnell repeated the dose as Stanthorpe showed early signs they were taking control of the game.
The Gremlins led 14 - 0 after Spencer Jensen crossed to score before Brothers found a way to the try line, fullback Jaiden Kelada posting the home team's first points.
A try by fullback Jacob Adams five minutes from half time had Stanthorpe in a healthy position at the break leading 20 - 4.
Captain/coach & lock forward Gary Skimmings set the example in the opening minute after the second half restart touching down for a try that incresed the Gremlins lead to 26 - 4 and sounded the starter's gun for his side to run in an additional 24 unanswered points on their way to victory.
Skimmings backed up with a second four-pointer minutes later before team mates Stuart Filmer & front-rower Nigel Bonetto also scored.
Back-rower Zac Hendry sealed the game with a try two minutes from the full time siren.
Stanthorpe will host the Valleys Roosters on Saturday at Sullivan Oval, from 2pm.
Its another vital clash for the Gremlins, and a must-win, as Skimmings aims to maintain a top-two position on the ladder.
Stanthorpe 50 (Gary Skimmings 2, Lachlan Hendry, Jake Burnell, Spencer Jensen, Jacob Adams, Stuart Filmer, Nigel Bonetto, Zack Hendry tries; Michael Marini 7 goals)
Brothers 4 (Jaiden Kelada try).
