Gremlins done and dusted
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Stanthorpe Gremlins bid for 2018 Toowoomba Rugby League Clive Berghofer 2nd Division Premiership glory has been denied.
The Gremlins came unstuck in the dying moments of Saturday's minor-semi final at Toowoomba's Glenholme Park, with opponents the Pittsworth Danes ending the Gremlins' season.
With the scoreboard reading 24-24 the Stanthorpe side incurred a penalty, the final result a try in the corner by five-eight Jake Morris to usher the Danes into next Saturday's preliminary final and a possible grand final berth.
Gremlins captain/coach Gary Skimmings was happy with his side's effort, "certainly disappointing to be out of the premiership race, but as expected it was a tough encounter”.
The scores were locked at 12-12 at half-time, and while the Danes shot out to a 24-12 lead by the ninth minute of the second half, Skimmings was pleased by the way "we ran them down late in the half to draw back level”.
Stanthorpe were well in the hunt for victory throughout, 17-year-old five-eighth Jake Burnell scoring a double in his ninth outing in Gremlins colours this year, and was also named Players' Player. Halfback Regan Sullivan was another to shine with a solid performance.
Tries by Damien Sutton and Jake Johnston early in the second half saw the Danes kick away with a spring in their step, but tries to Matthew Hendry and Jake Burnell had both sides on level pegging coming in to the final minutes.
The Gremlins have enjoyed their 2018 experience in the Toowoomba Rugby League.
"We didn't know what to expect,” Skimmings said."It was certainly a learning curve for us all.” Given the quality opposition week in, week out the Gremlins have shown across 2018 they have the ability and commitment to make an impact.
The club will celebrate its 2018 season with their presentation night at the Gremlins clubhouse on September 15.
