OPINION: Get your business mobile-ready

Re-boot Your Business, with Jeremy Billett, DEX columnist

THERE are a lot of changes all the time in the world of websites, and for small business it pays to stay up to date. The most recent update to Google search results will drastically affect how your search results rank for customers on mobile devices.

Since April 21, the device customers use to search through Google determine which websites and search results appear for them. The actual change is targeted at mobile friendly websites, rewarding those websites by giving them a higher priority for mobile searchers.

It makes sense right? If someone is looking for a website on their phone, it's better for the customer if they only see results that will display properly on their phone too. So if your website is not mobile friendly, you may start to see significantly fewer visitors to your website from mobile users.

The good news is that updating your website to be mobile friendly is usually an easy process, and does not often require a new website, a lot of money or months of development. These changes also have no affect on regular Google searches from a desktop, laptop or tablet, they are only for mobile devices.

So pay attention to your search ranking for your business, if you already have a mobile friendly website you may see strong growth over your competitors if they are too slow to update.

You can test your website to see if the change will affect you by visiting Google's Mobile-Friendly Test page online ( http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/) and typing in your URL. You'll even get a cool visual presentation of how Google thinks your website looks on a smaller screen.
