Gainey inspires Roosters

COACH Matt Gainey was player of the match in the Inglewood Roosters 36-28 victory against Stanthorpe in the Patron’s Shield final at Sullivan Oval on Saturday.

Stanthorpe went into the game between the leading teams at the end of the first round with an unbeaten record.

The trophy was presented by league patron Kevin Condrick, of Tenterfield.

Gainey received best support in the shield final from prop Ryan Donovan.

Halfback Jason Wilmot was the best of the Gremlins.

In reserve grade, Stanthorpe defeated Inglewood 34-24.

Second rower the best

SECOND rower Jason Lambert was the best for the Killarney Cutters in a 62-10 loss to Texas at Reg Saunders Oval on Saturday in A grade.

Texas led 48-6 at halftime on the back of some outstanding player by forward Robbie Morris.

Lambert scored for Killarney in the first half and Nat Hooper in the second half.

Killarney went into the game without four suspended players, Dion Galloway, Shannon Slater, Michael Marshall and Bevan Costello.

Slater will miss one more A-grade game while the other three will return on June 18 for the Charlie Andrews Oval clash against Inglewood.

Killarney president Mick Tattam said the club had six or seven players out with injuries.

On Saturday, Killarney is drawn to play Wallangarra at Wallangarra in reserve grade and will make a decision tonight about whether they have enough players to make the trip south.

Border Rugby League president Steve McEvoy said once the Cutters had players back from injury and suspension, they would be a force to be reckoned with in A grade.

On Saturday, the Wallangarra Rams beat Warwick 66-4 in reserve grade but McEvoy doesn’t support calls for the Rams to be in A grade.

“Wallangarra is a town of 400 and has a lot of young guys in the team who haven’t played the game before,” McEvoy said.

“I can’t see them going into A grade just yet. There are a couple of A-grade (class) players in the side but that is the same with other clubs.”

Tables:

A grade: Stanthorpe 10, Inglewood 10, Texas 6, Killarney 4, Warwick 2.

Reserve grade: Stanthorpe 10, Wallangarra 8, Inglewood 6, Killarney 4, Warwick 2.
