Free entry, bull ride and bar at Friday campdraft

A BULL RIDE on Friday night will lure newcomers and set the atmosphere for a fun-filled campdraft weekend.

The Stanthorpe Campdraft will have three bull ride competitions and two barrel races in addition to its seven main competitions, but Friday night's event is a taster for the public to enjoy.

"It's free entry for the public, and we've got a bar available and drinks,” Stanthorpe Campdraft subcommittee secretary Paula Boatfield said.

While spectating is free for all events, entrants pay a fee for all except the Mum's Run on Sunday.

"Thirty mums can nominate, and have an extra run,” Mrs Boatfield said.

"It's our way of saying thank you to those mums who have given up their day to support our draft.”

The 30 horses are lined up, which is "quite a spectacle”, she said.

Entrants will have been busy working their horses this week, getting them to peak fitness before the campdraft.

Many riders in this weekend's event would hope to compete every weekend, but with the dry conditions many towns have cancelled their annual campdrafts.

"(In) other country towns that rely on their annual campdraft competition, these drought conditions have meant that they can't have it,” Mrs Boatfield said.

"They can't get the cattle, or other circumstances prevent them from putting on their annual campdraft.”

As well as being great sport, Stanthorpe's campdraft is a social event that helps people escape the difficulties of life on the land, she said.

"It gives you a chance to talk about problems or achievements that you're having on the land,” Mrs Boatfield said.

"That's another reason why it's very important for country towns to try and put on their annual events like the campdraft.”

Results for the bull ride on Friday will be posted on Stanthorpe Rodeo's Facebook page next week.
