Fraser Coast beach rated in Australia's Top 10

FRASER Island's Seventy Five Mile Beach is one of the 10 best in Australia, according to a new book 101 Best Australian Beaches.

The authors should know, having spent a combined 34 years visiting every beach in Australia - all 11,761 of them.

Professor Andrew Short OAM is described as "the world's foremost authority on beaches", after writing 12 books and hundreds of scientific articles about coastal areas.

His co-author Brad Farmer is passionate about coastal preservation, co-wrote the first Surfing Guide to Australia in 1985, and is founder of Ocean Care Day and the Surfrider Foundation.

Prof Short, who uses the nick-name Professor Coast, visited every open Australian beach in 14 years, while Mr Farmer took a bit longer - about 30 years in total.

The men elected Seventy Five Mile Beach as one of their favourites in the country, citing its beautiful coloured sand dunes, rainforests and freshwater lakes.

"This long beach on Queensland's Fraser Island boasts ancient coloured dunes, bubbling freshwater springs, pristine lakes, and rainforest filled with wildlife," the men wrote in their review of Seventy Five Mile Beach.

"An astonishing 354 species of birds have been seen on the island, while the surrounding waters are home to dolphins, whales, dugongs, turtles and huge rays."
