Fourth place in league carnival

WARWICK and District Junior Rugby League players Mitch Watson and Nick Van Der Poel have played in the Darling Downs primary schoolboys side that finished fourth in the 11 years and under state carnival during the winter school holidays at Aspley.

Mitch goes to St Mary’s School in Warwick and plays club footy for Collegians.

He was starting centre in each game for Darling Downs and played strongly in defence.

Nick is a student at St Patrick’s, Allora, and is in the Wattles club.

At the carnival, he played fullback and won the award for best Darling Downs player in the loss to South Coast.

He also received the coaches and managers award for 100 per cent effort during the carnival.

Darling Downs started the carnival with a 36-12 loss to eventual winners Metropolitan West before beating Capricornia 12-0 on day two.

In their final pool game, Darling Downs beat Metropolitan North 12-10.

Darling Downs was second in its pool and went down narrowly to Metropolitan East in a semi final.

On the last day, Darling Downs lost 24-0 to South Coast in the play off for third.

Nick had one memory of the carnival that stands out, his 40-metre run against Capricornia.

“My play improved during the week,” Nick said.

“I usually play five-eighth for Wattles but was fullback in the carnival.

“Mitch and I combined a bit in attack.

“It was a great thrill to win the two awards in the carnival, I was a bit shocked they selected me.”
