RUGBY UNION: Demi Hayes was a star in athletics and touch early in her four years at boarding school at The Scots PGC College.

She won a Daily News/ Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Month award for athletics and touch while at Scots PGC.

During her time at the college, she started to play sevens rugby and is now lining up for her third series with the Australian team.

This week Hayes was selected to play with the Qantas Sevens team in world series footy in Langford, Canada.

She has two caps in a sport where series count in statistics rather than games.

Hayes debuted in Canada a year ago as a development player and then travelled to a World Series Tournament in Japan last month.

She has also competed in campdrafting as a junior, a sport where her parents, Michael and Bec, are two of the best each year at the Warwick Rodeo.

The Hayes family hails from Glenmorgan, a town the Australian player is happy to call home.

The Australian team also includes Charlotte Caslick, who was rated as the best in the world when the Aussies won Rio Olympic gold.

Caslick's father is originally from Stanthorpe and the family regularly returns to see extended family on the Granite Belt.

Selection in two Australian teams in the past month points to Hayes being a strong chance for the Australian team for next year's Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast, when the Aussies will be gold medal favourites.

The first game in Canada is on May 28.
