Former Brownlow-winning Eagle to retire

EAGLES star Matt Priddis will retire at the end of the 2017 AFL season.

The midfielder announced on Friday that he would be calling time on his 12-year career.

Priddis has played 234 games for the Eagles, kicking 70 goals.

"To play 12 years, being the slowest player in the AFL, I'm pretty proud of that," the midfielder said at his press conference.

Known for his relentless tackling and smart handballing ability around the contest, Priddis has been a fixture of the Eagles' midfield for more than a decade.

Priddis won the Brownlow Medal in 2014, while he was named All-Australian in 2015 and won the Eagles' best and fairest award in 2013.

He was also a member of the Eagles side that lost to Hawthorn in the 2015 AFL grand final.

The midfielder has averaged 26.2 disposals, 6.1 clearances and 6.8 tackles across his career - a testament to his hard-nosed style of play.

Originally drafted at Pick 31 in the 2006 Rookie Draft, Priddis was a mature-aged selection from WAFL team Subiaco.

He won the Sandover Medal while playing at Subiaco in his first season at West Coast in 2006, when he also made his debut.

His decision comes on the same day reports emerged that fellow Brownlow Medallist and West Coast player Sam Mitchell will also hang up the boots at season's end.
