Lismore first stop for new TV program on amateur bands

A NEW five-part television series to go along with a radio competition to find Australia's best amateur band begins filming next week, kicking off here in Lismore.

Exhumed, created by radio presenter, journalist and host of the new show, James Valentine (pictured), will see local ABC radio stations around Australia find their best amateur band before the national final finds the best of the best.

"I threw it out as a bit of a joke," Mr Valentine laughed.

"I was thinking about those dad bands that play at school fetes and weddings, and thought how cool it would be to have a competition among those."

Since that original idea, Exhumed was created, and Mr Valentine said he's astounded by what he's found, and just how many amateur bands there are out there.

Now they're starting to travel to some of the local ABC radio, capturing footage to use in a five-part series about the nationwide event, which will be aired from November and December.

"We want to applaud those who make music for the fun of it," Mr Valentine said.

"We want to find those who play for their friends, at fundraisers, at street fairs and school fetes. We want to say, we think you're fantastic, it's great what you're doing and don't stop doing it."

"This is not The Voice. We are not looking for a great undiscovered singer. It's not X-Factor or Idol - we are not about to create a new pop sensation. This is about recognising that there's a lot of great music making going on purely for the love of it."

As their website proclaims: It's not for has-beens, it's not for wannabes, it's for the never-weres.

Mr Valentine said he was excited to be coming to Lismore as the first location off the rank.
