LATISHA Coleman was sitting in her lounge when she thought she heard a gunshot.

She ran outside and saw massive flames ripping through her neighbour's home in Kawana in Central Queensland.

"There was black smoke everywhere," Latisha said.

The man, who lived at the property on Roderkirchen St, had been gone to pick his son up from school when the fire started.

"He was brave to move the car, we thought the car was going to explode if it wasn't moved," Latisha said.

Within minutes of the blaze engulfing the house, fire fighters were on scene after receiving a flood of triple 000 calls from nearby residents.

Fire fighters in protective gear swarmed the low-set brick home to douse the flames, but the home sustained extensive damage.

"The flames were huge and smoke was black and it ripped through the house so fast," Latisha said.

"We were worried some other homes might catch fire.

"Things from inside the house went flying out, things were exploding."

Latisha, who lives four houses down, said it was a quiet street and she never would have expected something like this to happen.

Rockhampton fire station officer Shane Slater said it was a relief that no one was inside when the fire started.

Investigations are underway into the cause of the fire.
