FOR Mackay Branch secretary of the United Firefighters Union David Russo, MPs receiving a 42.5% pay rise is a slap in the face.

The union have been fighting tooth and nail for a 3% pay rise with the State Government and feel let down that MPs are being awarded a rate 20 times more than that.

"We've been offered 2.2% ... We haven't had a pay increase for two years," he said.

"I understand they (MPs) have a very important job and daresay there is a lot of stress and long hours but our job - we're putting our lives on the line."
