Firefighters battle five grass fires in two hours

FIVE grass fires caught alight on the Southern Downs last night with one blaze burning close to a property.

Urban fire crews from Stanthorpe as well as rural crews from north Granite Belt, Broadwater and Applethorpe were called to fight the fires.

The first of the fires was reported at 6.05pm on the corner of Granite Belt Dve and Butler Rd at Stanthorpe, followed by fires at Pfrunder Rd at Pozieres, Teale Rd at The Summit, Pozieres School Rd and Pozieres Rd at Pozieres.

The last fire was reported at Pozieres Rd at 7.25pm.

A spokeswoman from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said the fire on Teale Rd was burning close to a property but firefighters protected it from damage.
