Fire ban extended for two local government areas

AFTER fires for 10 days in the Southern Downs Regional Council area, the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) has extended a local fire ban through to midnight Friday, October 4.

Residents of both Southern Downs and Toowoomba local government areas are included in the same fire ban. There was 10 days of fires on the Southern Downs from the start of the first fire on September 6.

The QFES stated conditions were now perfect for bushfires to ignite and spread quickly.

Under a local fire ban, all open fires are prohibited and all Permits to Light Fire which have been issued in the designated areas have been cancelled.

Power tools may be used during a local fire ban however QFES encourages people to use these with extreme care and ensure adequate equipment is available to extinguish any fire which may start from the use of power tools.

There is also a chance of vehicle exhausts and slashers starting grass fires.
