Former Gympie woman cage fighting her way up ladder

FORMER Gympie mother of two Arlene Blencowe is rocketing towards international cage fighting stardom after a dramatic debut win in California.

Blencowe, now rated third in the international Bellator multiple martial arts franchise, told The Gympie Times yesterday she is already looking to her next move up the ladder.

That chance will come in August when she takes on a still-undisclosed opponent from the top ranks of the cage fighting world

After that, the Australian featherweight champion will return to Australia to contest the World Boxing Association's interim world title in September.

Her jaw-dropping victory last month won rave reviews.

Fight News Australia reported her impressive world debut with Bellator, saying she had stopped a more experienced opponent with a technical knockout, only four minutes and eight seconds into the fight.

Arlene "Angerfist" Blencowe, 32, was already an accomplished international prize fighter with major achievements in boxing, wrestling, kick boxing, jiu jitsu and the sport that puts them all together, cage fighting.

Her hyper-intense six-day-a-week training schedule has taken her a long way from Amamoor and Gympie, where she grew up, attending Amamoor and One Mile primary schools, Gympie State and James Nash high schools.

She is , as she puts it, "taking it easy at the moment," training only twice a day. "I'll step it up in a couple of weeks," she said yesterday.

She is the first Australian female signed to Bellator.
