Fighting for title

WARWICK boxer Shane "Hurricane" Parry has won his first Australian title and now wants to go up a division and fight for a vacant national title in his hometown on March 31.

On Saturday night, Shane beat previously unbeaten boxer Jim Chapman in a unanimous points decision in Caloundra to win the Global Amateur Boxing Association national middleweight title.

Shane is co-coached in Warwick by his father Rodd Parry and grandfather Roy Parry.

Roy said the Warwick Boxing Club member beat a tough walk-up fighter who pushed his grandson to boxing heights he had not achieved previously.

Shane agrees it was his best performance to date.

"I am struggling to be matched in middleweight, so I want to take out the next division, light heavyweight," Shane said.

After his likely March fight, he will turn professional.
