Fifty arrests and over 300 charges laid in Bowen bust

FIFTY people have been arrested on more than 300 drugs charges following a major police operation in the Bowen area.

Bowen Detective Sergeant Mark Inmon said Operation Lima Drawdown closed on Tuesday and yesterday. He said the operation was the result of intelligence and information received about the supply and distribution of dangerous drugs, mostly ice, in Bowen and surrounding areas.

After six months of investigation by Bowen police, 45 officers executed 40 search warrants on premises.

Det Sgt Inmon said the charges related to the production and supply of the dangerous drugs ice, ecstasy and cannabis.

During the raids police seized about $70,000 in cash, a number of vehicles, one clandestine laboratory being used to produce ice and a quantity of cannabis plants.

Police also seized steroids and prescription drugs.

Det Sgt Inmon said officers enlisted to help with the operation were from specialist units drawn from the Brisbane and Mackay dog squads, Whitsunday Water Police, Rockhampton and Mareeba stock squads, Mackay detectives, Whitsundays, Ayr and Townsville drug squads and uniformed officers from the Mackay tactical crime unit, as well as from Proserpine and Collinsville.

He said six people would remain in custody until reappearing in Bowen Magistrates Court next month.

Police hope the operation has significantly disrupted the supply of dangerous drugs, particularly to the young adults and teenagers who are often easy targets for suppliers.

"The success of the operation will be gauged by the reduction of dangerous drugs being available and distributed in the community," Det Sgt Inmon said.

Crime prevention officer Senior Constable Steve Smith said all information supplied to police about drugs was assessed and acted upon.
