Fastest shot in the west
SHOOTING: After being shown how to shoot targets at age 14, George Costanzo has made it back-to-back wins in the Warwick Clay Target Club's 138th anniversary shoot.
The Warwick club increases its shoot by one target each year so shooters were aiming for a score of 138 at the 138th anniversary shooter.
Costanzo won overall by one target with 136/138. "I was wasn't ready for the two I missed,” he said.
He recalls being asked to have a shot by winemaker Dick De Luca at the age of 14.
"Dick had a hand thrower in the shed for practice. He showed me how to hold the gun and where to look,” Costanzo said.
There was no family history of clay target shooting but after one try out, Costanzo had a sport he loved.
He is a member and president of the Ballandean club and also competes in Warwick monthly shoots.
"When the opportunity arises, I go to Texas for shoots five or six times a year,” he said.
While he might have been introduced to the sport during practice, Costanzo doesn't practise any more.
"There is no better practice than competition,” he said.
"You learn to shoot what you see with the targets and must be aware of varying conditions and react.”
Ballandean Clay Target Club holds its next shoot on Sunday, September 16.
