Farmers fear rates rise
SIGNIFICANT fears are mounting in the agricultural sector over how farmers will survive the “cost-price squeeze” as rising rates add to their already growing list of bills.
Producer Liam O’Dea, who is in the “other agriculture and farming 2 category” said his own rates bill was going to go up about 30 per cent.
“I am amazed that my own rates bill is going up that much when the overall rise is only about 10 per cent. I’ll be looking for an explanation for that,” he said.
“Farmers will find this very difficult. We just don’t have it in our income. Our income is declining and costs are going up, this is adding to the cost-price squeeze that farmers are facing.”
Mr O’Dea added he had sympathy for the councillors who had to bring in a budget that was bound to upset many people, but must comply with state laws over which they now control.
“A large part of the increases are directly the result of changes imposed on local government by the state without even consultation, let alone compensation. On the other hand I’m pleased that more sealing will be done on the Cullendore Road,” he said.
